Five–man Constituencies Boundaries Commission appointed by GG

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 29TH 2008 (CUOPM) – The Governor General of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency, Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian has appointed a five–man Constituencies Boundaries Commission.
St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas at his monthly Press Conference on Wednesday said that the Federation’s Governor General “acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister after the Governor General consulted with the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Mark Brantley, and such other persons, appointed Mr. Anthony Johnson as Chairman of the Constituencies Boundaries Commission.”
“I also wish to inform you that on my advice as Prime Minister, the Governor General has appointed the Hon. Cedric Liburd and Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin as members of the said Commission,” said Dr. Douglas.
He also disclosed that Sir Cuthbert “acting in accordance with the advice of the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Mark Brantley, has appointed the Hon. Vance Amory and the Hon. Michael Perkins to be members of the Constituencies Boundaries Commission.”
Dr. Douglas disclosed that the members received their appointments on the 24th September 2008.
“This Commission will determine the sizes and where the boundaries will be drawn for the various constituencies in St. Kitts and Nevis to ensure that the sizes are near equal in accordance with the Constitution,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
St. Kitts and Nevis has been reforming its electoral process since August 2006 in preparation for the next general elections constitutionally due by October 2009. ~~Adz:Right~~
The ongoing efforts to improve on transparency, good governance and accountability have led to the cleaning up of the Voters’ List with the removal of some 15 thousand names through a confirmation process that began last December, the requirement to submit a photo identification when registering or confirming and the issuance of National Identification Card.
“This is a fundamental difference between my (Labour Party) Administration and the previous (PAM) Administration where we have relied in this reform exercise on consultation with the people to get various views and shades of opinion that will impact on the type of process that we use in the electoral reform exercise,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
