Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis, Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRIME MINISTER of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas has called on the Federation’s young people to vote, deeming it “a sacred right...that must not be sacrificed”.

The appeal came during his monthly press conference in the Parliamentary Lounge at Government Headquarters on Wednesday, October 29.

The PM spoke of the importance of voting, stating that “more [young persons] need to appreciate the right to vote”.

“Young people must understand that what is happening here is for them. My party had the fortune of fighting vigorously for the right to vote and I am not going to say that the young people don’t understand; rather, they are bright, they are intelligent and they understand, but they may not give a lot of serious thought to what is happening. But they have the capacity to understand.

“People were killed, our forefathers fought with their lives for this right to vote, and that is why I say our young people must not take this for granted. That is why I felt so passionately about carrying through the necessary reforms to ensure that there must be one man, one vote,” Douglas said.   ~~Adz:Right~~

He further stressed his party’s belief in the sacred right to elect a government, saying that such a right must not be bought and pleaded with young people not to sell this right that was won by the blood and the lives of their forefathers.

“That sacred right that our forefathers have won with their lives must not now be sacrificed for $200. So, we know that the people understand but we need to remind them constantly of where we have come from. We need to let them know that the situation as it is today was not always thus.”
