BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH its 59-student population marks the institution as the smallest school in St. Kitts, teachers of the Bronte Welsh Primary School are taking big steps to enhance the literary abilities of their pupils with the hosting of its 3rd Annual Reading Week, starting from November 3  and ending on November 7.

According to Daun Hazelle, Principal of the school, the initiative was founded to heighten students’ interest in reading.

“A lot of our students are from homes where emphasis is not placed on reading, so we realised that we have to do things to help the children appreciate books and enable them to focus on their reading,” said Hazelle.

Reading Week was declared open with a special assembly earlier today (Nov. 3) on the school grounds. Throughout the week there will be a number of activities designed to foster reading appreciation and to encourage children to read more.

These activities include computer reading programmes, persons visiting the school to read to pupils, word drills during reading lessons, and the posting of sight words and other reading words on doors and walls.

On Wednesday, November 5 the school’s cooking club will make letter-shaped cookies and cupcakes, while on the following day there will be a Reading Fair in which booths will be set up around the grounds.  ~~Adz:Right~~

In response to her expectations of the event, Hazelle said that she wanted to see three things happen.

“I want the students to read more books and I want their parents to encourage them to read more and to buy them more books instead of always buying them toys”.
