BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - In a close encounter at the Elquemedo Willet Park in Nevis yesterday (APR. 3), Charlestown Secondary School emerged winner of the 2013 Gulf Insurance Nevis Inter-primary Championships.
Hundreds flocked to see budding Nevisian athletes compete in the Championships dubbed ‘Mini Olympics’ and they were treated to an exciting showcase of speed, stamina and strength.
Following the penultimate event of the day, defending champions St. Thomas’ and Charlestown Primary were tied on points, with the final 4X400 meters event remaining.
The race turned out to be one sided as the athletes from Charlestown Primary took gold in that race with St. Thomas’ a far second place and giving the former victory win by the slimmest of margins – one point.
According to Nevis pages, in the Girls 100 meters dash, Kevally Browne of Joycelyn Liburd Primary defeated the outstanding Kurvella Wallace. And in the Boys 100metre dash, Imani Browne of St. Thomas’ Primary was leading the pack by the proverbial mile when he suddenly stopped. The other athletes closed in on him and he proceeded to run again, only to end up in a close and controversial photo finish for first place.
For a number of years the St. Thomas’ Primary dominated the Championships but was unable to defend their title this year. The event is seen as a national one on Nevis, as a half day holiday is common for support of the Championship
The final point standings are: Charlestown Primary 200 points, St. Thomas’ 199, Joycelyn Liburd Primary 142 and Ivor Walters Primary 85 points.
