BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SHAKEEM 'HOTNESS' WALTERS shed tears of joy this morning (May 15) when the young man who was charged with shooting him pleaded guilty at the Basseterre High Court.
Nyon Dasent, who was charged with the attempted murder of Walters, pleaded guilty moments before his trial was scheduled to begin.
The 22-year-old was represented by Attorney Denzil Hinds while Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Rhonda Nisbett-Browne was set to prosecute the matter.
A number of police officers were also scheduled to testify on behalf of the prosecution.
Dasent, following his guilty plea, was taken back to Her Majesty's Prison where he will await his sentencing upon completion of his Social Inquiry Report.
According to reports, Dasent shot Walters shortly after midnight on January 20, 2012 in Park Street, Basseterre in the vicinity of National Housing Corporation (NHC).
According to reports, the then 16-year-old Walters was found lying on Park Street in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
This publication learnt that one of the two bullets had damaged Walters’ spine and he is currently paralysed from the waist down and is also blind.
Dasent was arrest just 48 hours after the shooting incident and subsequently charged for the offence the following day.
Walters’ shooting had left many to speculate on whether it was a hate crime, as the young man was known for his ‘flamboyant’ dress code and hairstyles and was openly gay.
He also strongly believed that he was shot because of the lifestyle he chose, but quickly noted that dressing that way was being himself.
