    POLICE/COURT ROUND UP

    CONVICTIONS   ~~Adz:Right~~

     

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PERSONS recently appearing before the Magistrate Courts managed to escape prison sentences, but may see those decisions revoked if they fail to pay the fines awarded as punishment within their given time frames.

     

    Urban Penny of Lockhart Street, who is more commonly known as ‘Massive’, was convicted of one count each “making use of indecent language”, “causing malicious damage” and “battery”.

     

    On the first and second counts he was fined $1 000 to be paid within six months and $2 000 to be paid within six months or, in default, he would be required to serve three months imprisonment.  He was “severely cautioned” on the latter charge. The offences were committed on January 1, 2008

     

    Sandy Point resident Claudette Liddie was convicted of “false pretence” and ordered to pay $2 580 compensation to the virtual complainant. The sum is to be paid before the end of the year and, if she fails to pay the sum buy the prescribed time, a six-month custodial sentence would be imposed.

     

    A Fort Thomas Road juvenile was convicted of robbery and was placed on 12-month probationary period in the sum of $2 000. Should he not adhere to the court’s order, a one-month custodial sentence would be imposed. He was also required to pay a compensatory sum of $722 within three months or serve three months imprisonment.

     

    ARRESTS

     

    Three individuals of Saddlers Village in the persons of Kimwell Matthew, Curtis Elliot and Dania Phipps were arrested and charged with one count each of “malicious damage”.

     

    West Street, Newtown resident George Carty was arrested and charged for possession of cannabis.

     

    These persons are expected to make appearances before the Magistrate’s Court shortly to answer their charges.

     

    SEARCH OPERATIONS

     

    Resultant of routine operations conducted by police, Junie Mc Donald of Conaree Village was arrested and charged with “refusing to give name”, “resisting arrest” and “battery”, while Sean Jacobs, also of Conaree, was arrested and charged for carrying abroad an offensive weapon.

     

    According to a police press release, “Police conducted routine stop and search operations on Wednesday 12th November 2008 in the Port Zante, Mc Knight, Market Street, Newtown and Conaree area for illegal drugs, arms and ammunitions and for items use in the commission of crimes.” As a result, the two Jacobs and Mc Donald were arrested.

     

    Also, “Similar operations were conducted by members of the security forces in the West Farm, Conaree and entire Basseterre area on 12th November 2008 and a total of 12 persons were stopped and searched and a quantity of cannabis was found in the possession of Andy Williams of Buckley’s Site. The drugs were taken into custody and charges are being prepared against him.”
