BASEETERRE, St. Kitts - THIRTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Camron Wilkinson, who pleaded guilty to unlawful carnal knowledge, was sent to Her Majesty's Prison to spend the next six years.

Wilkinson was charged for unlawfully having intercourse with a 44-year-old woman who is viewed by law as a child because of her incapacity.

The offence took place on October 31, 2011 in Conaree where Wilkinson is said to have pulled the woman into some bushes and proceeded to have intercourse with her.

It is also said that Wilkinson was stopped by a male relative of the victim while engaged in the illegal act, and when asked what he was doing to her, he allegedly told the relative that what was taking place had nothing to do with him.

At sentencing, Wilkinson asked the Court to be lenient with him, given his guilty plea. He said he had never been in trouble with the law, adding that he was grieving the death of his girlfriend.

His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas asked Wilkinson if he appreciated what he did to the woman and he replied in the negative.

Reading from Wilkinson's Social Inquiry Report, Justice Thomas said he was described as a soft-spoken person who had never offended the law; an individual who was raised by his mother and had a good relationship with his father.

Before passing judgment, the judge said that the Court had to consider the nature and manner in which the crime was committed, the penalty of law and the age of the offender as well as who the victim was.

He told Wilkinson that sex could not have been a rarity for him, given the fact that he said he had lost his girlfriend shortly before the crime was committed.

He said that sexual offences were prevalent and getting worse and that the Court had to do something about it.

Justice Thomas told Wilkinson that he had no previous conviction but the crime he committed was very serious.

Wilkinson was given a nominal sentence of nine years which was reduced by a mandatory one third because of his guilty plea.

He was sentenced to spend six years behind bars and the time he spent on remand will be deducted.
