BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN keeping with its motto of “Service Above Self’, the Rotary Club of St. Kitts has undertaken another initiative to enhance the lives of children on the island with its adoption of the Bronte Welsh Primary School.

The adoption was formally instated with a brief opening ceremony held at the school’s grounds in Boyds yesterday (Nov. 18).

Rotary International’s Regional District Governor Georges Nouh-Chaia presented a plaque to the school as a tangible symbol of the club’s newly established commitment to the institution.

The club has already executed several related activities, including the erection of a new school sign at the foot of the road leading to the school, clean-up of the schoolyard and the placement of trash bins in every classroom.

Club President Betty-Ann Gilbert vowed that the club would become actively involved in the school’s activities.

“We hope that through our efforts here we can empower students to develop into future leaders,” she envisioned.

The sentiment was echoed by Rotary St. Kitts’ Community Service Director Robert Morris, who hoped that since students would be learning in a cleaner and more conducive environment, they themselves would promote cleanliness and keep their surroundings tidy.

Senior Education Officer Rita Cable commended the club’s members for their community efforts and noted that “while the government does what it can for the nation’s schools, they cannot do it alone”.

She also encouraged the pupils to emulate the club’s actions and to be more giving.

“Many persons in the world nowadays are all about getting when the focus should really be on giving. I compel all of you to go through life giving more than you receive and you will be twice blessed,” added Cable.
