BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A thought-provoking and unparalleled production displaying the effects of crime and violence on local society will be held by students and teachers of the Basseterre High School (BHS) through its third ‘Silver Lined Verse’ production.

The production, which will be held at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank on Saturday, November 29, will feature pieces in drama, poetry and dance depicting the students’ and teachers’ interpretations of the impact of crime and violence on St. Kitts and Nevis’ social fabric.

The idea for the production was birthed by Kesha Isaac, Social Studies and Performing Arts teacher at the BHS. The first production was held in April of this year at the Basseterre High School Auditorium and as was requested, a second production was staged in June.

Isaac, a graduate of the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts, in an interview with SKNVibes explained that the proverbial light bulb went off in her head after her students’ positive reaction to a new teaching approach she had implemented.

“I was teaching on social issues to my Social Studies class and I normally use the whole drama- role playing thing in class to get the students to understand the topic. That was with my third formers who are now my fourth formers.

I found that they were very enthusiastic about it, and one day I was using poetry and they were writing poems on the different social issues and it popped up in my mind to ask them if they would participate if I put on a show. They all jumped onboard.”

Although not as well attended as was hoped, Isaac said the first staging of Silver Lined Verse was a resounding success and the second production, attendance of which was better than the first, was also a success.

She indicated that just as there was a demand for staging of a second production, there was demand for yet another.

“The whole purpose of going through this a third time is to expose a wider cross-section of the population to and get them more sensitised and aware of what’s going on through a medium that they could appreciate and even enjoy.”

Isaac, who is also a choreographer and actor in the production, promised that the event would not only prove to be thought-stimulating but would also be a “fun” and “exciting” experience.

In addition to the students and staff members of the BHS, Khalifa Pencheon and Onelia Williams are also members of the cast.

Curtains open on…“the poetic journey through our society…” at 7:00 p.m. when cast members will present, through performing arts, a step by step delineation of the different elements of crime and violence and their respective repercussions.

Adults are required to pay an entrance of $20, teenagers $10, children between six and 12 pay $5 and children of lesser age are not required to pay. Tickets can be purchased from Acklyn Blaize (662-4720) or Leon Bullen (6674971), or payment can be made at the door.
