~~Adz:Left~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THREE individuals who appeared before the Magistrate Court last week escaped custodial sentencing but were issued fines which they must pay if they are to continue avoiding serving a prison term.

St. Peters resident Virgil Gumbs was convicted of escaping lawful custody on October 16, 2008 and was fined $3 000 which is to be paid within six weeks. Failure to do so would result in him having to serve a three-month custodial sentence.

Having appeared before the District “C” Magistrate’s Court, Conrad Liburd of Pinney’s, Nevis was convicted of one count of possession of cannabis and fined $1 000 to be paid within two months or, in default, he would have to serve six months imprisonment.

The offence was committed on August 17, 2008.

Akim Anthony of Main Street, Cayon was convicted of driving without due care and attention, carrying abroad an offensive weapon, driving without a valid license, taking a vehicle without the consent of the owner and driving without insurance. On the latter offence, Anthony was cautioned but was fined $700 on the first charge and was also disqualified from obtaining or holding a driver’s license for six months.

Meanwhile, three individuals who were arrested and charged with various offences are expected to make an appearance before the court shortly.

For a November 19, 2008 offence of obstruction, Fig Tree resident Mc Donald Forde and Thomas Riley of Sandy Point were arrested and charged.

Charlestown, Nevis resident Jermelle Nisbett was on November 19, 2008 arrested and charged with larceny and permitting another to drive without the appropriate insurance.
