Opposition supports appointment of New Governor General

    ~~Adz:Left~~ St. Georges, Grenada -
Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell says the Opposition will not behave as the NDC did during the swearing in of the former Governor-General Sir Daniel Williams twelve years ago and wishes to extends best wishes to Mr. Carlyle Glean. Sr.  as he takes up this important role as Governor General.

The Opposition  advises the public that key members including the Leader of the Opposition will be absent from the swearing in ceremony as two members are currently out of State and the Leader of the Opposition will be leaving the State tomorrow for an important business engagement in the United States. . This engagement was rescheduled from the week of the 17th November, 2008 to accommodate the swearing in of the New Governor General expected to take place on the 19th November.

Dr. Mitchell noted that this again demonstrates the need for the government to consult with the Opposition when setting dates for Parliament sittings and has made many calls for this in the recent past.  He indicated that the former leader of Government Business Mr. Gregory Bowen, was assigned the task to consult with the NDC while in opposition, to determine the best date to hold a number of Parliament sessions.  He hopes now after the numerous requests, this same courtesy will be extended to the present Opposition.

The Opposition also calls on the Government to do all in its power to ensure that our institutions are respected and hopes that the new Governor General will not have to experience the same malicious and vindictive attacks that were meted out to the former Governor General Sir Daniel Williams.  The opposition is also concerned that to date the Government has not disassociated itself from the attacks made by persons known to be advisors or associates of the Tillman Thomas administration.
