                                                              St Kitts power crisis continues

~~Adz:Left~~ BASSETTERE, St Kitts – The People's Action Movement has noted that inspite of assurances given by the government, the country's electricity problems remain unsolved since there were more widespread power cuts over the weekend.

"There appears to have been a nationwide power cut on Saturday during the day, while more areas were out without power at various times on Saturday night and during the day on Sunday," said Bernard Welsh, PAM's spokesman on energy.

"It is clear that inspite of the assurances that we can put away the flashlights and so on, the problem has not been resolved," he said.

"A week ago the Denzil Douglas administration suspended two workers accusing them of wrongly changing the settings that caused the power outages last week. We are waiting to se what the excuse will be this time."

"The people are running out of patience with the ineptness of the government and Douglas and his group are running out of excuses," Welsh said.

The PAM member, who has been linked as a potential candidate in Constituency 3, said the issue of the unreliable supply of electricity was very much on the constituent's mind when a team of party leaders meet with them during a walkabout on Saturday night.

The team included PAM leader Lindsay Grant and MP Shawn Richards.

"As if to make the point for them, during the walkabout, the lights went out in the area," Welsh said.

Welsh said that the announcement by the government that the power crisis was solved was not only premature, but an attempt to cover up its inability to solve the problem that has been simmering for almost a decade.

He said it was clear during Saturday's walk-about that people of all political stripes have become completely fed-up with the state of affairs.
