Guyana Fashion Weekend continues with resilience

By: Winnielle Pereira, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - GUYANA Fashion Weekend is just months away and model CEO of GFW and Fashion Designer Sonia Noel is already preparing and executing for the sixth annual fashion event.

The show is scheduled for October 20-27 and for the first time, this year’s event will have more of an international flare as well as new features that include an opening show entitled ‘Cutting Style’, which will bring together both food and fashion to the stage and the catwalk.

How do the two come together? A designer will be paired with a chef to create food and fashion on stage.

Innovative! And a definite must see.

Guyana Fashion Week Six will host an entire week of activities with events such as tours, workshops, styling sessions and catwalk training, which are a few of the new features for 2013.

The runway events are slated for the last week and producers and organisers have been in communication with a host of international models and fashion designers to grace this year’s runway.

It has been said that in 2012 the 5th annual hosting of GFW was a testimony to the resilience of a blossoming Guyanese creative industry, despite the prevailing economic conditions. It was an expression that non-traditional forms of income generation must be accessed.

It was also a sign that a talented and creative community exists and that at all cost and much hard work they would utilise their ingenuity to create business opportunities.

Guyana Fashion Week is indeed a celebration of Guyanese style and a proclamation for Caribbean fashion. Now entering the sixth year, international creativity shall be encompassed within this positive movement with the continued embracement of the private sector.

This weekend (Jun. 23) kicks off this year’s premier event with auditions for both designers and models to be held at the Water Chris Hotel from 3:00 p.m.

All interested designers are asked to come down to the Water Chris Hotel this Saturday, June 23, 2013 between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. with at least five sketches to audition. And models, all shapes and sizes, male and female, between 3:00p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Male models are asked to walk with a pair of shoes and fitted jeans or pants, while female models are asked to walk with a pair of heeled shoes, no less than four inches high, leggings and mid-riff tops.
