BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE implementation of the St. Kitts and Nevis Disposal (SKANDIS) recycling project, a new and innovative method of garbage disposal initiated in late September, has aroused great interest at the Verchild’s High School.

The corporate and educational institutions have enjoyed a close relationship which was further strengthened yesterday (Nov. 28) with the donation of five computers to the school in appreciation of being the host for the project.

During a brief handing-over ceremony held at the school, the principal, Addison Warner warmly accepted the four HP laptops and one desktop and thanked the company for its continued support of the school. He indicated that the equipment would be used to enhance the school’s overall information system and added that the gift was a symbol of SKANDIS’ cooperation with the school.

“When we looked at all the plastic that the sea spat out after Hurricane Omar, we were all shocked. We had a clear idea of all the garbage we had not properly disposed. And so, this project serves to help us to have a better way to properly handle our garbage. We are grateful that SKANDIS has taken the lead in such regard and has chosen this school for this project,” Warner said.

SKANDIS Representative Orelma Wattley told SKNVibes that the success of the project symbolizes that recycling is well needed in St. Kitts. She indicated that although Verchild’s High is the smallest public secondary school, its large garbage production has exceeded the company’s initial expectations.

“Can you imagine how much the other schools produce? We encourage them as well as other businesses to join the programme or do similar projects to ensure that the environment maintains a healthy status for future generations.

“Government is going to have to take a look at the large plastic production, collection and disposal, and assess the effects that they will have on the landfill and our environment.
SKANDIS is trying to make recycling a part of St. Kitts not only through small-scale projects but also through legislation that would ensure the collective recycling on the islands.”

Wattley expressed her gratitude to the school for accepting the call and undertaking the project and indicated that in the near future SKANDIS would be adopting the school to further advance the other phases of the project and assist in various projects. ~~Adz:Left~~
