Dismissed Public Works minister will not challenge Prime Minister

    Ambrose George

ROSEAU, Dominica-AMBROSE GEORGE, the former Public Works and Infrastructural Development Minister of Dominica has stated that he will not challenge the November 18 abrupt decision of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to fire him.

Increasing pressure had been put on George in the weeks leading up to his removal from office because of a number of corruption allegations levied against him. Among the most severe was a rumour that he skimmed thousands of dollars in funds from a November 2007 offshore banking deal with the Private Capital Bank of Spain.

“The atmosphere around the country seems like we are facing another 2005 situation where several allegations and criticism were leveled at me where they are trying to put me in a light that I clearly do not belong in,” George said before a gathering of his Roseau South constituents last week.

~~Adz:Right~~“I have not been removed as your Parliamentary representative.  In fact no one can do so except you the people,” he added.
Though George has maintained his innocence over the allegations, he said that he has little choice but to follow Skerrit’s orders to demit his office in the ministries.

“My conscience is clear and I will go anywhere and everywhere and repeat that my conscience is clear. I have not done anything that warrants any criminal action to be taken against me.

“[Skerrit] acted within the authority of the law, however, as enshrined in the constitution and no one can challenge that. The same way that the PM can appoint a Cabinet, he, acting within the law, can also dis-appoint a member of his Cabinet.”

According to Dominica News Online, George has continued to operate out of his constituency office in New Town since losing his ministerial duties earlier this month and plans to once again contend the office for the Parliamentary representative for the Roseau South constituency in 2010.
