Speaker out of order…says Condor

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING yesterday’s (Jul. 8) verbal squabble in the Federal Parliament, Member of Parliament the Hon. Sam Condor has concluded that the Speaker of the House, the Hon. Curtis Martin, is “out of order” and is unaware of proper Parliamentary procedure.

Despite an attempt during the Parliamentary session by Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition to have the Order Paper amended to include the Motion of No Confidence, the Speaker ruled that no Motion would be debated on that day.

This prompted all Members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition to stage a walk-out of the Federal Parliament, citing that they could not be involved in any Parliamentary procedure barring the Motion of No Confidence. They also reiterated their view that no other matter ought to be dealt with before the Motions of No Confidence are tabled and debated.

Following the walk-out, Condor spoke with SKNVibes and indicated his discontentment with the Speaker’s ruling.

“It is the Speaker’s own way of either not understanding the rules or conducting the Parliament in the way it should go. The speaker is really out of order! Right now there is no business that should take place in the House before the Motion of No Confidence.”

Condor said the Opposition would not be indicating what their next move in agitating for the tabling of the Motions would be, but noted that “we are just going to make sure that proper Parliamentary procedure takes place and democracy is preserved.

“We went into Parliament to make the point and will have to do that every time to pursue what’s right. And when it doesn’t happen, we will come to the streets”.
