    22-year-old Shirvon Greene of Nevis

NEVISIAN sprinter Shirvon Greene has again risen to the top having won Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2008 Cross Country Season of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championships.

For the season  he set 4 new school records as well as 4 personal best times including his career best  of 18:12 sec in the 5 mile run.

The cross country season closed at the end of November and on Tuesday, November 28, Greene was able to accept the award at the Monroe College Athletic Award Dinner held at the Westchester Country Club, New Rochelle, New York.

In October SKNVibes.com reported that Greene placed 8th out of a field of 150 athletes from 8 different schools at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championship Cross Country season opener while setting a new personal record in the 5K run at that time.

However, for this feat he was awarded his second consecutive cross country M.V.P award. In addition he also received his 2nd consecutive All-American Award due to his G.P.A average of 3.96 in the field of Accounting/Finance.

In his acceptance speech Greene thanked his family, coaches, teammates, the Craddock Road community, his 2003 graduating class at the Charlestown Secondary School as well as the entire island of Nevis for their support.

“To my teammates  and fellow athletes present tonight lets use tonight not only to celebrate but build towards the future to be inspired, to get to know our teammates better and to build chemistry,” said Greene.

He continued “As I stressed last year enthusiasm is a rare commodity that is lacking in our locker rooms but we all have the key which is teamwork and unity in order to put this enthusiasm into full drive.”

In closing he echoed the motivational sentiments of US President-elect Barack Obama, “To my fellow athletes I urge you to strive for excellence, and when faced with the urge to quit you tell that urge ‘No, I won’t quit!’ instead utter these words ‘Yes, I can!”
