BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TRAFFIC was momentarily diverted earlier this afternoon (Dec. 3) when two cars collided on South Independence Square Street in the vicinity of one of the branches of S.L. Horsford & Co.

The accident, involving a Mazda Roadster (PA6692) owned by Dennis Morris and a Toyota Hilux (PA1178) owned by Jason Gumbs occurred shortly after noon.

According to Morris, he had stopped at the junction of West Independence Square and South Independence Square Streets to unload a passenger, after which he switched on his right indicator signalling where he was heading.

Morris said as he was making the turn, Gumbs’ vehicle collided with the right side of his car causing it to strike the stationary I Queen ice cream cart that was parked on the left side of the road.

Morris stated that he had checked his rear view mirror before executing the manoeuvre and that Gumbs’ Jeep had been nowhere in sight.

However, Gumbs maintained he did not see Morris’ vehicle when he turned onto South Independence Square Street from Bank Street.

No resulting injuries were reported and Morris’ car sustained damage to the right passenger door and left back fender while Gumbs’ left front light was broken.

Statistics from the Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force indicate that there have been 797 traffic accidents in the Federation from January to September of this year.

In 2007 the Federation recorded 1 164 traffic accidents.
