Prime Minister Douglas convenes National Consultation on Crime

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, DECEMBER 9TH 2008 (CUOPM) – Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is convening a National Consultation on Crime on Friday.
Dr. Douglas is keeping a promise made last week Tuesday on the weekly programme “Ask the Prime Minister” to convene the forum following the receipt of the comprehensive report on crime from a top United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) official.
Prime Minister Douglas promised that the report will be brought to the public for consultation and discussion involving several stakeholders including political parties.
The report, which is a comprehensive study of the root causes of the problem of crime, especially gang violence among young people, was shared last week Wednesday with the Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry and his NRP-led Nevis Island Administration (NIA) during the quarterly joint Cabinet Meeting.
“We will then formulate our national plan to deal with this particular issue,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who urged all stakeholders including the church, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and all the political parties to “sit down and discuss what needs to be done to ensure that we can live a safe, decent and better life and those who visit us can also enjoy our country.” ~~Adz:Right~~
The Ministry of National Security said the consultation will be held on Friday, 12th December, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, Frigate Bay.
“This National Consultation on Crime will provide the requisite forum to dialogue with Government officials, the security forces and civil society in devising and arriving at clearly defined roles for a collaborative approach to address this scourge,” the Ministry said in a news release.
Participants have been invited to engage in constructive discussions on this issue as their views will further inform the existing national security plan.
