BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRINCIPALS and teachers of the island’s primary schools, who are seeking an extra-special way to treat their pupils before the Christmas season begins, can take advantage of a package being offered by Caribbean Cinemas (CC).

According to the Local Director of CC, Shervin White, the package allows primary school students to view movies at a reduced price not only before and during the Christmas season, but also after the season ends.

The package was officially launched yesterday (Dec. 8) with the attendance of scores of students from the Estridge Primary and Edgar T. Morris Primary Schools.

It [the package] enables all pupils, irrespective of age, to purchase a movie ticket for EC$12 and receive a free drink and bag of popcorn. Interested schools can contact White to make the necessary arrangements.

Yesterday, some pupils were heard expressing their awe and excitement, compounded by the fact that, for many, it was their first trip to CC.

Janelle Williams, a teacher at Estridge Primary, praised the promotion and deemed it “a great idea” and “a lovely package, as so many of the students would be unable to come [to the cinema] otherwise”.

According to White, the initiative is one in the first of many charitable endeavours of the company.

“CC is here to stay. One of our main goals has always been to give back to the community, and this programme helps us to fulfil this mandate,” he said.

White noted that this new venture could result in the generation of more business as satisfied children could compel their parents and relatives to take them on return trips to the cinema. He also revealed intentions to eventually extend the package to high school students.

“Children will now be exposed to the cinema as a form of positive entertainment and it is better that they be occupied by things like these instead of criminal activities,” he explained.

The package will run indefinitely throughout this year and 2009.
