TUESDAY JULY 30, 2013; KINGSTOWN, SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES – Both Saint Lucia and hosts Saint Vincent and the Grenadines lost volleyball matches today, as the 2013 Windward Islands School Games continued.

Played at the Girls High School Courts, Saint Lucia and Dominica clashed in what many saw as a continuation of the decades-old rivalries between those two sub-regional volleyball foes.

Dominica took a closely fought first set 25-21, but the Saint Lucians rallied back to win sets two and three 25-16, 25-14 respectively. The Saint Lucians gave away many points without any pressure being on them, while at the other end of the court, the Dominicans seem to lose all energy and focus.

But back came the lads form the Nature Isle to win the fourth set 25-22, to send the game into a deciding fifth set. The pendulum swung both ways and with the scores at 14-13 in favour of Saint Lucia, it was a do-or-die situation for the Dominicans.

The leveled the scores at 15-all and the Saint Lucians missing control of the rally, sending the Dominican camp into pandemonium with a 16-14 fifth set victory and a most important one at that having lost their opening game to the Grenadians.

While spectators were catching their breath and not expecting the second game to be just as gripping, Grenada and hosts St. Vincent and the Grenadines gave another dosage.

Grenada won the first set 25-21, lost the second 19-25, won the third 25-17, and lost the fourth 20-25. The teams battled tooth and nail, and with St. Vincent and the Grenadines enjoying a 13-12 lead, some supporters began to jump and prance, while others had somber looks.

The Grenadian camp soon went wild with joy with a 15-13 fifth set win, and their second in the tournament.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia are scheduled to complete their game on Wednesday, which Saint Lucia leads two sets to love. (Robertson S. Henry/robertsons.henry@gmail.com
