Press Release

BASSETERRE St Kitts, August 12th 2013 -  The Rotary Club of St. Kitts, under the Distinguished Patronage of Sir Edmund Lawrence and Lady Hulda Lawrence held its 44th Installation and Awards Dinner Ceremony on Saturday July 6th 2013. The Ceremony was attended by rotarians, partners-in-service, and friends and supporters of the Rotary Club of St. Kitts.  The ceremony took place at Government House Grounds under the Theme: Serving, Caring and Sharing, for a better St. Kitts – Nevis.  This apt theme was conceived by partner-in-service Rubina Nisbett.

The Rotary International Theme for this year 2013-2014 is “ENGAGE ROTARY, CHANGE LIVES.

The Board members for the 2013 - 2014 Rotary year are: President Louisa Lawrence; Immediate Past President Earle Kelly; Vice President Stacey Hobson; President Elect Patricia Mourillon; Secretary Robert Morris; Treasurer Leah Crag Chaderton; Sergeant-At-Arms  Dwayne Hector; Club Administration Director Douglas Gillanders; Rotary Foundation Director Frances Ann Satney; Membership Director Sonya Parry; New Generations Service Director Gordon Nicholls; Public Relations Director Patricia Mourillon; Service Projects Director Ron Carty.

As a Rotary Club, we depend on our generous and community-minded members, friends, partners, donors and sponsors to carry out the work that we do. At the Installation Ceremony, Immediate Past President Earle Kelly highlighted some of the activities that the club undertook in our communities for the past year 2012-2013, made possible largely through this very generosity.

The Club held two major fundraisers during the year - a raffle and an International Dinner.  We thank all donors who support our fund raising efforts.

Our club, as always, maintains a close relationship with the Rotaract Club, the establishment of which we sponsored 27 years ago.

As is customary, the Club held the annual Christmas lunch at the Cardin Home and participated very actively in the luncheon festivity.  We also held the annual Foster Care Christmas Party at Government House for over 50 foster children and residents of the Children’s Home.

The children at the Children’s Home also participated in the annual Treasure Hunt organized by the Brimstone Hill Fortress Society.  Our Club’s members provided transportation to and from the function and provided snacks and drinks for the children.

During the year, the Club distributed packages of food and toiletries to over sixty needy members of several communities throughout St Kitts.  We thank all who sponsored this effort.

We continued to provide support to the Advancement for Children Foundation during the year.  The Club made several donations to assist persons who needed medical assistance overseas.  Our members partnered with Healthy Island Living and with Parks and Beaches in a Moringa Tree planting exercise in 16 communities around the island.

Our sister club, the Rotary Club of Hackettstown in New Jersey, sourced for and donated to the Rotary Club of St. Kitts, hospital equipment and supplies, and over thirty fireman suits.  These were distributed in St. Kitts and Nevis.  We thank this club and the local shippers and agents who assisted in this effort.

Some of our members hosted Group Study Exchange from the United Kingdom, and together with our sister Rotary Club here in St. Kitts, helped to maintain the country’s reputation for outstanding hospitality.

The Club initiated a program to present a 400 page Caribbean English Dictionary to each student in the third grade in the 24 public and private schools in St Kitts.  This project is funded by a grant from the Christophe Harbour Foundation.

We began another project which involves assisting with preparing students in the 5th forms of the high schools as they leave school, particularly in the areas of the job application and interview process, and being a good employee.

The Rotary Club of St. Kitts is built on a strong foundation, and will continue to be a force for good in our communities, with continued firm emphasis on community support. We will remain true to our purpose – Service above Self.

To all donors, partners and friends who have supported and who continue to support the undertakings and programmes of the Rotary Club of St. Kitts, the Club extends sincerest gratitude and appreciation.  Rotary will continue to be ENGAGED and to CHANGE LIVES IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
