CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - APPROXIMATELY 23 primary school students, aged eight to 10 years, are this week enrolled in an art and craft workshop facilitated by the Nevis Public Library.
The Christmas Craft Workshop, as it is called, commenced this morning (Dec. 16) and will run until Thursday, December 18 when the students will showcase their creations at their exhibition.
Librarian at the Nevis Public Library Lornette Hanley spoke of the purpose of the workshop while highlighting some of the difficulties they encountered this year.
“The idea of the Christmas Craft Workshop is to occupy the children around this time, for just a few days, and also for the children to learn some skills…how to be creative, make their own decorations.
“It’s just about three days because we are presently short staffed and some of the staff is due vacation, and so we can only accommodate them for three days this year,” Hanley said.
According to Hanley, the children are being encouraged to utilise the inexpensive materials around them to make Christmas decorations.
These materials include egg-crates, construction paper, string and cardboards which are used to make bells, boots, trees and angels.
In response to the reason for the workshop only being made available to eight to 10-year-olds, Hanley spoke of the challenges that younger children may have encountered.
“For the eight to 10, some of them might be able to use the scissors properly. We would not have so much mess to begin with also; and for some of the things we are doing like, for instance, angels, they have to trace them and then they have to cut them out, so we catered for the older set who can manage or handle some of the craft on their own as we supervise. So, that’s the main reason,” Librarian Hanley said. ~~Adz:Left~~
The workshop takes place daily from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
