Low pressure system hovers over Caribbean…

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE St. Kitts – THE people of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis and the wider Caribbean are keeping a close eye on the weather as an area of low pressure over the area has a 30 percent chance of development into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.

The system brings with it showers and thunderstorms and, according to www.nhc.noaa.gov, it is “centered about 100 miles west of Dominica” and it has a 50 percent chance of progressing into a tropical cyclone over the next five days.

“Locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to affect portions of the northern Lesser Antilles over the next day or so…and spread over Puerto Rick by Thursday.”

If the system advances in strength, it is likely that much of the Caribbean would not be affected, especially since it currently moves in a west-north-westerly direction at a rate of 10 miles per hour.

“Upper-level winds are expected to remain favorable for development over the next few days...but interaction with the land masses of the Greater Antilles could inhibit tropical cyclone formation as the system moves generally west-northwestward at around 10 mph.”

Residents of and visitors to the Federation are asked to closely monitor the weather and pay attention to the media for updates.
