Vybz opens up about struggles of his music journey

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MANY artistes, undoubtedly, could testify to encountering both sweet and bitter experiences while in pursuit of a career in the music industry.

Very often these artistes resort to sharing their business-related challenges and success stories through their music, of course.

In a new song called 'Believe It', upcoming popular national Reggae and Dancehall artiste 19-year-old Shakier 'Vybz' Challenger lyrically sums up instances of highs and lows of his journey in the music industry.

In an exclusive interview, Vybz said the song, which was released on Aug. 15, is about his '"rocky road" experience.

"This track is really about my struggles in the music business; a rocky road it is...really. In this new song, I’m singing out my heart about what I go through and, in doing so, allowing the supporters of ‘Vybz Music’ know the reason behind why they don't hear my material like they used to on the radio airwaves.”

He added: “In coming up with this song, I was optimistic that it would be a great song and so I had to sing out and let the people understand me.”

So what exactly is the explanation why his fans were not regularly hearing his music blasting over the airwaves in recent times?

Well, according to him, “I decided to sit back and do some observation. And while doing so I came across a lot of negative stuff affecting my growth as an artiste, including the fact that my songs were not getting the usual airplay on radio. My fans got really upset about this and many voiced their discontent. So I decided to sing ‘Believe It’ because music is powerful in reaching out to people…more specifically to my fans in this regard.”

Under management’s guidance, Vybz said he has been making proper use of technology by publicising his music via his Facebook fan page, www.facebook.com/Vybz-Music, which he believes is quite effective in reaching out to his fans and other supporters.

He is of the opinion that the local DJs play a vital role in helping to promote the work of the home-grown artistes.

He extended ‘big ups’ to DJ Sugar Bowl and DJ Ubal as well as the other DJs, promoters and supporters for “not giving up on local talent”.

Vybz explained that whilst growing up he had developed a passion for music and always surrounded himself with it. The past Verchild’s High School’s student recalled days of performing at school-organised entertainment events.

“Most of what I did in my life is follow music. I really love music! From age 15 I was involved in school-organised shows and other musical environments. I surrounded myself with music and every day of my life I took it step by step day by day. I wrote music, I sang, shouted and cried out so people could hear me out. Music is my life and I will keep growing through it.”

Some of the artistes whom he admires are his fellow nationals like Infamus, Silky, Footsy and Dagah as well as well-known Jamaican Reggae artistes Luciano, Tarrus Riley and Bushman.

Vybz talked about his mission as an artiste, which involves impacting people's lives.

"My mission it to live up to my brand, my name and my words to spread only love and positivity through music to change people lives, to sing for the people that may not be able to speak for themselves, to create and to surround the youths with love as a mentor, an inspiration for people who will look up to me and those who are not yet familiar with Vybz music will soon get to because love doesn't lay around in one corner."

Vybz said music has played a major part in his life and he is grateful for the opportunities gained as a growing artiste from the Federation of St. Kitts-Nevis.

"Music has played a big, big part in my life. Growing in music changed a lot of things I never thought would have turned to be good. I also had a lot of challenges but it is a learning process for me. Being able to perform on big shows like the Freedom Concert that was held a few years back opened the gate for me and so I kept pushing. I was also given a chance to perform on the Maydaze show with Aidonia in 2011 along with the Digicel Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant that same year.

He continued: "Getting to meet new people and gaining so many fans, friends and family members have been very heart-warming. They play a big part in my life and if it weren't for them I wouldn't have been doing what I do today, and I'm thankful for all this. I appreciate what the promoters been doing for me as well as my fans, family members and everyone else around the world who keeps supporting my music."

Asked how he would describe his music journey at present, Vybz said, "Educated and successful."

In relation to the knowledge aspect of his journey as an artiste, Vybz pointed out: "I've learned a lot growing up listening to music…not just about music itself but about the streets and about the people. So it was and still is a learning process for me because of the mission I was on.  It’s now completed! I've achieved the first step of my goal and I must be thankful for the good I have gained from it.”
