BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALL the props, lighting and fixtures are in place for the first performance of the stage-play ‘The Cry’, the latest Moses Byron Production, which is expected to focus on the social implications of crime on the family and the community at large.

Organized by Youth Exploring Talent Theatre (YETT) and Ambassadors for Peace and Empowerment, the play will be held at the Basseterre High School tonight (Dec. 19) and young actresses would portray mournful mothers recounting their heartbreaking stories of the loss of their loved ones as a result of crime.

Lead actress in the play Tasanna Wattley said as a young individual she is very passionate about sensitizing the public of the detrimental effects that crime has on a society, and noted that the opportunity to reach out to youth is very timely.

“I am indeed grateful for this opportunity where I can use my talent to appeal to persons of all ages, classes, races and gender. We are fed up with the state of crime that has caused a great sense of fear in the hearts of many locals. We want people to see that we are in a crisis and are crying out; it is something serious and we need to recognize that and nip it in the bud!

“We are very passionate about this problem simply because it has been affecting our families and communities and has by extension added to the deterioration of the nation at large. It is no longer a problem that we only see on the television or hear from some distant land; this is our home; our land. We need to act more responsibly and be more respectful to one another.”

Wattley stated that the group is expecting hundreds to respond to the messages that would be staged as they would “be able to relate to the sensitive and disheartening stories of the mothers affected by this scourge of crime”.

In urging the public to come out to support the event, Wattley said, “If we are able to reach out to the public and appeal to their emotions, we would be able to command the necessary response and agitate change in the behaviours of our nationals. This is not a six-point plan; it is not a crime consultation. It is an opportunity for members of the general public to understand the ability of crime to break down the fabric of the society.”

The play begins at 7:30 pm and has an admission fee of EC$10. ~~Adz:Right~~
