CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - RESIDENT of Nevis and employee at Scotia Bank’s Charlestown Branch Hadassah Willett was recently awarded a full comprehensive scholarship from the Jackson, Mississippi-based Tougaloo College.

The scholarship is expected to cover room, board, tuition and book costs during Willett’s time of study at the college.

Representing Tougaloo College at the brief handing over ceremony were Stephen Smith, Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management, and Director of International Programme Larry Ray.

Speaking of the college’s plan to matriculate residents of St. Kitts and Nevis and other Caribbean islands, Smith said, “This is a partnership that we hope to venture with the Caribbean for students throughout the Caribbean. We have set aside scholarship funds particularly for students from St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We are really interested in diversifying our student population and I think that the Caribbean presents a perfect opportunity for us to do so, because there are so many academically talented students who are looking for an opportunity to study abroad and Tougaloo wants to fill that vacuum.”

According to Smith, this is a new initiative that his college has embarked on and Willett is the first recipient of such an award.

“This is the first scholarship offer that we’ve done. In fact, we’ve done something that we’ve never done in the history of Tougaloo. We actually set aside scholarship dollars for students from the Caribbean,” he said.

Willett, who has plans of studying medicine, will commence her studies at Tougaloo in January 2009.

She recorded her gratitude to the college and its representatives for their contribution.

“I would like to thank Mr. Smith and Tougaloo College for this comprehensive scholarship. I know it will assist me in my endeavours to become a medical practitioner.  Thank you very much and I hope to see you soon,” Willett said.

Tougaloo College currently offers studies in 29 majors with the most popular being Natural Science; Computer Science; Economics, with emphasis in Business and Accounting; Social Work; Sociology; History; Philosophy; and Music Education.
