Boy gains sight after Cuba health mission surgery

PARAMARIBO, Suriname-IT has been reported by the Cuban embassy in Suriname that an eight-year-old boy has gained his sight in one eye after receiving an operation as part of Cuba’s ‘Operation Miracle’.

Eduard Tasjero Sjegnile was born blind in both eyes, but can now see from his right after the lengthy specialist surgery by Cuban ophthalmologists was conducted last week.

Dr. Diana González Poveda, Head of the Ophthalmologists Brigade, said that Sjegnile was “very happy after the surgery and looked around trying to discover a world he didn’t know”.

The young boy’s ‘miracle’ is scheduled to continue early in January 2009 when preparations are expected to be completed and the surgery for his left eye will begin.

According to the release from the Cuban embassy, “this surgery is just an example of the many performed by Cuban doctors since Operation Miracle started in Suriname on October of 2005”.

There are currently ten specialists performing operations in Suriname and have reportedly treated 2,847 patients and have performed 500 surgeries that would have otherwise been impossible.

Additionally, the program has delivered over 5,000 procedures to CARICOM states since its inception.  ~~Adz:Right~~
