BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – POLICE COMMISSIONER Darwin Dottin has expressed serious concern about the number of policemen who get into trouble with the law.

According to Caribbean 360, Dottin’s remarks come in the wake of a Barbadian police officer facing a court on charges, which is the fourth policeman to be accused of a crime this year (2008).

According to the Commissioner, the presence of dirty cops is a regional problem; one that compelled him to engage the Caribbean Association of Police Commissioners.

“It is a problem we have spotted and it is something we are serious about addressing,” he said.

He suggested that the processes used by regional police forces to recruit and train officers should be reviewed.

Additionally, he disclosed that another area of concern to him was the relationship between the media and the police, as there have been several incidents in Barbados involving disputes between both sides. ~~Adz:Right~~

Most recently, two photo journalists were arrested when they tried to take pictures and record footage of the accused officer, Constable Tory Brathwaite.

Dottin revealed that he had launched a full investigation into the charges.

“We desperately need to find out why things like this keep occurring. We will have to look at ways to deal with it by accelerating a meeting between senior members of the force and senior managers in the media,” he said.

However, according to The Nation newspaper, Dottin has made similar promises of investigations but has yet to disclose their outcome.
