By: Precious Mills, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – JUST one week after a Mercedes-Benz was involved in a three-vehicle accident on the Bay Road and flipped on its side, a similar one occurred today (Sept. 21), which caused a black Kia Sportage to also rest on its side in the middle of the road.

SKNVibes was at the scene of the accident, which took place early this morning (Sept. 22) on the Bay Road between Lower Share Lane and College Street Ghaut, in the vicinity of the Ferry Terminal and Coury and Company Ltd. Hardware Department.

Constable Carey of the Traffic Department informed this media house that the accident occurred at about 9:05 a.m. and had involved a black Kia Sportage (PA 4302), driven by Dwayne Earl of Temple Alley; a black Toyota Tacoma (PA 8071), owned by Patrick  Phipps of College Housing;  and motorcar PA 8756, owned by Omawatti Paige of Cayon.

He said that the circumstances surrounding the accident are that PA 4302 was travelling east along the Bay Road when the driver lost control and collided with PA 8071, which was parked on the northern side of the road facing east.

Carey went on to explain that as a result of the collision, the impact propelled PA 8071 into the front of the motorcar, which was also parked on the northern side of the road.

He also explained that during the process PA 4302 had overturned on its right side in the middle of the road.

SKNVibes observed that the right side of PA 4302 was badly damaged and had to be towed away from the scene, while PA 8071 is said to have a damaged chassis but minor damage was done to the motorcar.

As for injuries, Constable Carey explained that the driver complained of chest pains and was taken to the JNF General Hospital.

Reportedly, Earl was the only occupant of the vehicle and there were no reported injuries.

Phipps, the owner of the Toyota Tacoma, is a fruit and vegetable vendor who usually sells on the Bay Road every Saturday morning with his wife.

He told this media house that he and a lady were in the area where he sells when they heard “bang!..and the next thing the jeep was on its side”.

Phipps stated that the chassis and spring of his vehicle got broken from the impact and noted that his livelihood is dependent on the vehicle, because that is what he uses to transport his produce.

Questioned if the Kia Sportage was travelling at a fast rate, Phipps answered in the negative, noting that there was no “excessive speed”.

The lady who was with Phipps at the time, also stated that the vehicle was not travelling at a fast rate. “He was not driving fast...he just come up cool.”

Phipps revealed that he normally washes his vehicle around the time the accident occurred and was thankful that he was not engaged in his usual activity.

The driver of the car was approached by media workers but he declined to comment on the incident.

Last Saturday afternoon (Sep. 14), a similar three-vehicle accident occurred on the Bay Road in the vicinity of the Post Office.

Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department had reported that at approximately 4:00 p.m. that day, a Mercedes-Benz (P6115) driven by Angel Omuohu of Bird Rock was travelling west on the Bay Road when she lost control and collided with P6262 owned by Lorraine Wilkin of Bladens and P6265 owned by Sylvester Herbert of Shadwell.

Both vehicles, P6262 and P6265, were parked on the southern of the road during the incident.

P6115 had collided with P6262 and flipped on its side in the middle of the road whilst the impact propelled P6262 into P6265 that was parked ahead of it.

Constable Carey said that Omuohu had sustained bruises to her arms and legs and was taken to the hospital after complaining of headache.

He advises all motorists to drive with due care and attention according to road conditions.

Additionally, he reminded that the speed limit in towns and villages is 20 MPH and 40 MPH in the non-built up areas.

Motorists are further advised to drive cautiously along the Bay Road on Saturday mornings which is usually very busy during market day.
