Accident victim appeals for bus operators to drive with caution

By: Precious Mills, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AN injured passenger is appealing for bus drivers to be alert and cautious at all times on the road following a two-vehicle collision that took place early yesterday morning (Sept. 30) in Keys Village, involving an Omni motorbus in which she was travelling.

Speaking with SKNVibes, the woman, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said she was on her way to work when the accident occurred.

She explained that a motor jeep that was travelling ahead of the bus had stopped but she did not know for what reason.

Apparently, the bus driver proceeded to overtake the jeep, but in an attempt to avoid oncoming traffic he swerved and slammed into the right rear end of the vehicle, causing the rear windscreen to fall and shatter on the street.

Last night SKNVibes spoke with Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Lyndon David, who gave details about the accident.

He informed that the accident occurred at about 7:47 a.m. in the vicinity of New Dawn Moravian Church and Four Miles and had involved motor Omnibus H4096 owned and driven by Vernon Casey of Ponds Pasture and motor jeep PA7947 driven by Senetta Mathew of Molineux.

Asked about the circumstances surrounding the accident, he said such is currently “under investigation” and a press release would be disseminated to the media thereafter.

David is advising all motorists to adhere to the speed limit, especially in built up area, and exercise the necessary precautions.

He went on to explain that drivers should stay on their side of the road when approaching a corner, reduce speed and always expect that something could be ahead that could cause one to alter speed such as  a rock,  broken down car, animal or pedestrian.

Inspector David also appealed for pedestrians to use the road safely and wisely.

He further advised road workers to communicate with the Traffic Department and to always have the necessary signage placed on the road so as to advise the public of the road conditions ahead.

He said six passengers were taken to the hospital following the accident; four from the bus and the others from the jeep.

The woman who spoke with this media house sustained a minor injury to her right shin following the impact of the crash, which is swollen.

She admitted that she did not remain at scene but soon after realised that her foot was paining while she walked, so she went to the hospital for treatment.

She shared that two primary school students, who seemed to be under the age of nine, were travelling in the motor jeep, and among those in the bus were another primary school student and his father.

The woman highlighted that after the collision, the father asked his son if he was alright but the boy appeared to be in shock and was not responding.

She pointed out that it was just last Wednesday (Sept. 25) around the same time when a similar accident occurred involving the same Omnibus.

SKNVibes was informed that a man, whose father was killed after he was ran over by an Omnibus a few years ago in that same area, was also a passenger aboard H4096, and with with a number of expletives expressed his anger with the driver, saying, “Look how he nearly kill de people dem” while stating how his father died.

This media house was also told that in venting his frustration, the man claimed that every day bus drivers are always rushing through Keys Village.

It was gathered that the deceased had also lost one of his feet in that accident.
