BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 6TH 2009 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says his ruling Labour Party continues to proper the twin-island Federation into a high-end luxury destination which will provide higher wages for its local population.

Dr. Douglas expressed his government’s determination to continue the creation of a new and diversified services economy following the closure of the decades-old sugar industry.

He said that the new economy is based on tourism, financial services, Information and Communication Technology and offshore university education services, supported and facilitated by enhanced production in respect of agricultural produce, fishing, livestock farming, handicraft and light manufacturing.

Prime Minister Douglas noted that since his ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party assumed office in July 1995, the apron, terminal and parking facilities at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport has been expanded and upgraded to accommodate more jets.

The expansion has resulted in twice weekly flights from New York and daily flights from Miami by American Airlines, weekly flights from Charlotte and Philadelphia by US Airways and a weekly flight from Atlanta by Delta Airlines.

“Indeed we now look forward to the commencement of a weekly British Airways direct flight from Gatwick-London on January 10 of this year,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He noted too, that when he took office in 1995, the Southeast Peninsula was merely a home for cattle and goats, with little or no immediate prospects for development.

“My Government has attracted vast amount of direct foreign investment to the area. Currently, Kiawah Development Partners are constructing a world-class Tom Fazio Golf Course that is expected to become the centrepiece of the Christophe Harbour Development that will include a classy Mandarin Hotel, a high-end Marina capable of accommodating some of the largest and most luxurious yachts on the seas, and hundreds of luxury villas that will enhance our room capacity and provide a wide range of employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for our people,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He said over the years, his Government has attracted the St. Kitts Marriott Resort to Frigate Bay along with a number of other real estate and villa projects and disclosed that quite shortly the Ritz Carlton will announce its involvement in another major hotel and villa project on the Southeast Peninsula.
