Carnival Chairman hoping for early releases from contestants

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN recent years, many carnival lovers have complained about the late releases of carnival music and have called on the Carnival Committee to put measures in place to ensure there is an improvement in that regard.

Some believe that carnival music should be on the airwaves at the start of November, while others have called on the Committee to institute deadlines for the release of music.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Carnival Chairman Sylvester Anthony stated though he agreed with the idea of the bands and calypsonians releasing earlier but declared they could not control that aspect of the carnival.

“We can’t run everything, and really the bands have to deal with those matters themselves.”

Anthony added that he hoped the early start to carnival would send a signal to the participants to get their music released earlier than in previous years.

“What we are hoping to do is to send a signal. By us starting early and setting deadlines and encouraging people to register, we hope it sends a sufficient signal so that they can get out and organise themselves.”

The Chairman reiterated the need for participants to release their music early.

“The calypsonians need to be out early, the soca monarch artistes need to be out early with their music so people can hear them and people can be encouraged to attend the shows.”

Anthony added that the committee facilitates the carnival but it is the participants who make the carnival.

“So we hope everybody understands not just the committee has to start planning early but the participants have to start planning early, as we do not make carnival...we only facilitate it.

“The calypsonians, the soca artistes and the bands, it is they who make carnival. They are the ones who create the environment that people need to have a good carnival.”

Carnival is expected kick off on November 23, 2013 with a T-shirt Mas Street Parade.
