BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SINGING sensation and Soca Monarch contender – Khyla Brown – has wasted no time in whetting the appetites of her fans with the release of her first National Carnival 2013/2014 song.

Khyla, daughter of calypsonian and media operative A. U. Browne of Sandy Point, released her ‘Tonight’ tune via social media and local media houses.

The song tells of how she would have a ‘bubbling’ good time with her dance partner and promised that ‘Tonight’ he is guaranteed “plenty of action to your heart’s content”.

This publication conducted an interview with the 18-year-old songstress about this release and other related issues including whether or not she is considering entering the calypso arena, and the creative force behind her song and her love for soca music.

Below are the proposed questions and Khyla’s responses.

Question: What is the inspiration behind your soca song?

Answer: It is party-themed! One that can allow the audience to catch on quickly and relate easily, as it is filled with modern day jargon and dances that we do often in the Caribbean.

Question: Who wrote the song, the music and who produced it?

    Answer: My father, Prince A.U.

Question: You came close to winning the Soca Monarch Competition last year. How confident are you of taking the crown this year?

Answer: I am confident in myself to work hard and work to the best of my ability. My intentions of taking the crown are there but my performance of the night will speak volume and determine the place I capture in the competition.

Question: Being one of the youngest competitors in the game, do you ever feel intimidated by the experience that you come up against?

Answer: Honestly, I do not as I am not easily intimidated. And in participating in this competition, I really get to know myself better as a young adult and also gain that experience like the other competitors would have done for themselves.

Question: I have only heard one song. Is there another? And if it hasn't been released as yet, when will it be?

Answer: One song is on the market right now and I will be releasing the new one very soon.

Question: What is it that you would want to be remembered most for as a Soca artiste?

Answer: My youth-like characteristic, as they say I am 'spunksy' and full of energy and the great power that I bring to the stage as a performer and artiste.

Question: I know you sing other genres of songs, but what got you interested in Soca and what was the driving force?

Answer: My father got me into singing Soca...I am a Soca junkie and I love it.

Question: Any thoughts of entering the calypso arena?

Answer: I am getting encouragement from everywhere to enter the calypso arena but I have no thoughts of doing that right now because I am focusing at one genre at a time and developing myself as an artiste.

During Khyla’s debut performance at the 2012/2013 National Carnival Soca Monarch Competition, she copped the Second Runner-Up position in the Groovy segment.
