BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWENTY senior officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and one from the Fire and Rescue Services are attending a seven-day Senior Police Executive Management Seminar at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino.

The seminar, which began yesterday (Jan. 15), will run until January 23 and is funded by the Canadian Government through the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Officers ranking from Inspectors to Commissioner will have the opportunity to acquire new skills and crime-fighting abilities throughout the workshop, which is facilitated by Canadian crime expert Paul Jolicoeur.

The courses will focus on the pivotal areas of management and leadership training, curriculum review and development, and community policing. According to Jolicoeur, the seven-day session would also include self-analysis exercises to ensure that officers are aware of their roles to implement strategies resulting from the seminar.

Chief Secretary Joseph Edmeade called the course “another example of the government’s full commitment to crime prevention”. ~~Adz:Right~~

“The government will continue to implement the best recommendations that have come from a wide cross-section of the society and will continue to commit itself to ensuring the ability of members of the security agencies to fulfil their mandate,” he stressed.

Attorney General Hon. Dennis Merchant echoed this sentiment and revealed that although the government is heartened by the reduction in certain categories of crime, it continues to be disconcerted by the increase in gang activity.

However, he noted his optimism that this seminar would have a positive impact on the government’s crime reduction efforts, as it is “designed to equip senior law enforcement agencies with techniques to develop strategic plans of action and to improve their crime detection and prevention efforts”.

Merchant also reinforced the government’s “zero tolerance” stance on crime and its commitment to building the capabilities of the security agencies to ensure implementation of polices reflecting this view.

“Additionally, we will continue to build the forensic capability of the Criminal Investigation Unit, collaborate with regional and international partners in our crime fighting approach, and do the follow-up work from the National Crime Consultation held last year,” reassured the Attorney General.
