Basseterre, St.Kitts (Team UNITY Communications) -- Leader of Team Unity, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris has said, “The country has lost confidence in the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF). The SIDF has become a Slush Fund for Denzil Douglas and it has become a key instrument in the efforts of Denzil Douglas to buy votes and favour for the upcoming elections. Rather than being used to help the poor, support former sugar workers and progressively empower our people, the illegal government is using the SIDF as a slush fund to help its friends and foreign interests.
There is no transparency and accountability in the use of public monies garnered from the sale of our principal national asset -our passports. One man and his puppeteers make a determination of what is to be done and who is to get what. All kinds of schemes are invented to get $90 million, $42 million, $15 million to his friends and election donors here and there, $5000 here and $50,000 there. Imagine our passports are involved and hundreds of millions of dollars are involved, yet we know so little about it.
In November 2011, Denzil Douglas promised the IMF that the audited financial statements of the SIDF would be made public by December 2012. We are near the end of December 2013 but one year later IMF must realize that Douglas deliberately lied to them. The financial statements for 2011 and 2012 should have been published by now.
Douglas is hiding the people’s business from the people. Douglas is not reporting to the people about the people’s money neither is he telling us how and why our passports are getting into the hands of people much to the annoyance and consternation of the government of Canada and the U.S.A.
Douglas does not want us to know about the deals with Kittitian Hill and Belmont Estates Development. He does not want us to know about Christophe Harbour and nature of its involvement with SIDF.
Team Unity will bring government into the sunshine. We will give the people the information, which they need to evaluate their Unity government and make it accountable to them. In this regard, we shall pass the Freedom of Information Act and we will subject the SIDF to Parliamentary scrutiny, and regular reporting to the public” said Dr. Harris.
