SKELEC to host training session for local electricians

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN an effort to standardise the installation of meters in the twin-island Federation, the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) will be hosting  a one-day training session tomorrow (Dec. 4) for electricians and contractors.

This pronouncement was made by SKELEC’s Planning and Construction Engineer Hannif Woods, who told this publication that the training session is to provide local electricians with the knowledge of the standard procedures required for the installation of meters.

Woods added that the training session would assist electricians and contractors to better understand the “new metering standards and what SKELEC expects from them”.

He declared that many electricians have not been installing meters to the standards at which the local electrical company would like.

“We would like at the end of the training session to have all electricians come up to the standard where all meters and wiring come up to one standard. And that is what we will be planning to do on Wednesday.”

He explained that the one-day training session is open to the public, but specifically to electricians or those who are involved in wiring and metering.

The engineer cited two sub-standard practices in which some electricians and contractors are engaged and noted that SKELEC is seeking to have them rectified.

“Firstly, electricians and contractors tend to locate meters anywhere which they see fit to them and, secondly, using different colour wiring.”

Woods said that the one-day training session is one of many programmes SKELEC has in place to assist electricians in having the requisite knowledge to deal with electricity and wiring.
