BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE leadership and management skills of 20 top officials from the nation’s security agencies have been enhanced and strengthened with the conclusion of the Senior Police Executive Management Seminar at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Casino yesterday afternoon (Jan. 23).

The seven-day workshop began on January 15 and was facilitated by Paul Jolicoeur and Gord Gregoire, retired personnel from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Nineteen senior officials of the Royal St. Christopher Police Force and one from the Fire and Rescue Services attended the workshop, which was geared towards the refinement and improvement of their management skills.

Courses were focused specifically on areas including Strategic Management and Leadership, Productivity, Basic Crime Scene Management, Security of Recreational and Tourism Facilities, Curriculum Review, Succession Planning, Organisational Structural Review, and Intelligence Gathering through Community Policing.

Jolicoeur expressed satisfaction at the seminar’s conclusion, stating that all of the participants possess the required abilities to be great managers and great leaders. He also articulated his hope that the course would give them the extra boost necessary to translate these leadership and management skills from theory to practical application.

Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas revealed that the training seminar was one of the components of the overall Canadian-Caribbean Corporation Fund Law Enforcement Training Assistance Programmes for St. Kitts and Nevis. He further stated that, so far, 42 percent of the membership of the police force had benefited from the various training activities.

Addressing the participants, Douglas said, “This is a significant achievement in the capacity building and resource development thrust for the police force.

“We are all cognisant of the fact that as global development introduces a new wave of criminal activity, the environment in which you serve has changed and will continue to change. Be sensitive to emerging new threats and prepare yourself to confront the many developments that would threaten safety and security,” the Prime Minister advised.

Douglas congratulated the participants and reinforced the government’s commitment to the investment in mechanisms of national security. He also reiterated his sincere gratitude to the Canadian government for their financial and technical support.
