No King Konris for Carnival

Konris ’King Konris’ Maynard

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - REIGNING Calypso Monarch Konris ‘King Konris’ Maynard has announced that he would not be defending his crown at this year’s Senior Calypso Monarch Competition.

After being recently named the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s candidate for Constituency Number Three, many calypso lovers and politically oriented individuals debated on whether or not he should compete.

In a past interview with SKNVibes, Maynard appeared undecided about defending his title, but admitted his entry into politics would play a “significant role” in any decision.

However, in an exclusive interview with this media house today (Dec. 12), Maynard declared that he would not be competing in this year’s competition, citing his political aspirations for prompting the decision.

“I am not going to defend...I announced it today on the radio. I am not defending because I have decided to take up a new avenue in life and I do not want that to overshadow the competition.”

Maynard is the winner of eight local crowns in both the calypso and soca art forms, as well as three Leeward Island Calypso Monarch titles.

He is yet to be defeated in the Sugar Mas Calypso Monarch Competition.

The Sugar Mas 42 Calypso Monarch Competition will move into its Semi-Final stage on Sunday (Dec. 15), when 18 artistes will be competing to be among the top eight contenders who will advance to the Finals slated for December 28.
