Market Street Community Cleanup continues today

Residents assist in phase one of the community cleanup

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IN an effort to further develop the Market Street, Soho and Dorset areas, the Market Street Community Development Group will continue its beautification drive today (Dec. 14) with phase two of its cleanup campaign.

The Community Cleanup is expected to begin at 6:00 a.m. and would focus on the areas of Soho and Dorset Villages.

Speaking with group member James Hanley, he told SKNVibes that the cleanup drive is the first project of the newly-formed group, which saw it as a drive that would benefit all in the community.

He said the group, with the assistance of present and former residents of the areas, would be disposing garbage, cleaning the streets and drains as well as empty lots.

Phase one of the cleanup was done last Saturday (Dec. 7) and Hanley said that the group received a great feedback. He said that the members would like to see an even larger turnout today as they continue with their efforts to rejuvenate the community.

"Last Saturday we cleaned Upper Market Street and a small portion of Rectory Road. Our intention is to go to Soho and Dorset Village as well as the back portion of Market Street and the other part of Rectory Road tomorrow," Hanley informed.

He said the feedback was better than expected, adding that once the cleanup kicked off the community gravitated towards it.

"We had well over 50 persons assisting in the area and we also had assistance from Her Majesty's Prison and other persons."

Hanley said large disposal bins would be available to collect all types of waste.

"The white waste includes refrigerators, stoves, washing machines and items of that sort; and the green waste would be used to collect grass, shrubs from the lots and the household garbage. We are doing it this way to make it easier for Solid Waste Management to sort the waste."

Hanley is encouraging all residents of the area to support the group's efforts in enhancing the community's beauty and take part in the cleanup which, he said would be equally beneficial to all.

"We want to encourage the residents of the area to come on out tomorrow morning and be a part of the cleanup. Please put your waste out tonight and very early in the morning. But, don't just put out the waste but come on out get involved too.

"We are also asking the residents to assist the elderly persons with the disposal of their rubbish as well," he encouraged.

He informed that the group does not want the cleanup to be repetitive and hopes that the residents would take heed and properly dispose of rubbish from henceforth.

"We do not want it to be a revolving door...we do not want to have to do another cleanup next year. We prefer in the future the people properly dispose of their waste. For example, we would prefer if people do not have their old refrigerators or stoves just lying around, but instead seek the assistance of Solid Waste Management to come and have it removed."

The Market Street Community Development Group is made up of present and former residents of the Market Street, Soho and Dorset communities.

The group was formed with the aim of revitalising the sense of community spirit and interdependence that were once prevalent amongst the residents, doing so through the development of community based and community funded activities.

"We are trying to not only enhance the entire area but also bring back the community spirit that was there once ago," Hanley said.
