UWI welcomes students to January semester

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus on St. Kitts and Nevis has demonstrated its belief in a flexible education with the admittance of some 19 individuals who commenced their higher level education in January rather than September, as is the custom.

The 19 students - 16 on St. Kitts and three on Nevis - officially began their journey on January 26, 2009, the beginning of the semester, and had their session of orientation about two weeks prior.

According to a press release issued by the institution, the admittance of students to the UWI Open Campus during the January semester was not uncommon but those students were “specially admitted”.

“At their Orientation Session on Wednesday 14 January Mrs. Olivia Edgecome-Howell, Country Head, described them as ‘trail blazers’ as they are among the first cohort to be admitted in the January semester,” the press release said.

It described the new development as a “major policy change” and noted that it is very much suggestive of the flexible nature of an education which is offered through the Open Campus.

Just as others students, the “trail blazers” will be exposed to a programme of delivery that utilises a “blended mode”; that is, the intermingling of teleconferencing, online tutoring and face-to-face tutorial sessions.

The January-admitted students, according to the release, would pursue bachelor degrees in Accounting, Economics and Management.

“The UWI Open is the fourth campus of the region’s premier educational institution. It provides a flexible learning opportunity as it delivers a range of programmes at pre-university, certificate, undergraduate and post graduate levels as well as short term career professional and person development courses. Its motto is ‘Online. On site. On demand’”.
