PM making accusations without proof...says Brantley

Leader of the Opposition the Hon. Mark Brantley

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - "IT is sad that PM Douglas has sought through innuendo to inflame this unfortunate incident and blame the Opposition. To connect a peaceful opposition protest at the Marriott with these fires several hours later and several miles away can make sense only to the most cunning and calculating mind.”

This was the view expressed by Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and member of the Unity Movement the Hon. Mark Brantley, in response to Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas’ suggestion that the recent Venezuelan Embassy and Organisation of American States (OAS) fires were politically motivated.

Brantley said Dr. Douglas is experiencing “tremendous political pressure” because of the year-old Motion of No Confidence which still hangs over his head. And the Prime Minister - he declared - sees the occurrence of these fires as a chance to cast blame without proof.

“It seems to me that our minority Prime Minister gets from these fires an opportunity to hurl accusations and innuendo against the Opposition without a scintilla of evidence. But, more importantly, he gets a much needed distraction from the growing crescendo condemning the refusal to debate the Motion of No Confidence and the demands for fresh elections.

“Let us not be surprised if these fires form the basis for him to seek to impose emergency security measures on our people in an effort to quiet the growing cacophony of discontent against his minority government. History has taught us that one way to quiet discontent is to first label those seeking justice as criminals and terrorists. The life of Nelson Mandela bears stark witness to this age old tactic of the oppressor.”

The Opposition Leader said they would not lay blame for the fires but pledged their cooperation in bringing those responsible for the acts to justice.

“We in the Opposition have condemned these acts of violence unreservedly. Unlike the Prime Minister, we will not seek to blame him or any other person or group for these fires. Instead, we continue to call on the public to cooperate fully with the police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. It is our fervent hope that when that investigation occurs, the hot glare of suspicion does not lead to those who now themselves hurl unwarranted and unsupported accusations against the Opposition.”
