CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - LIKE many others across the globe, US couple James McGuire and Kathy Nolan have become victims of the current financial crisis. They both lost their jobs but have since risen above the resulting challenges to take a sailing trip to the Caribbean.
SKNVibes caught up with the couple on Monday (Feb. 2) after they stopped in Nevis on their way to St. Martin.
James and Kathy, captain and chief mate of their own boat, were enjoying the recently installed wi-fi at the Nite Moves Garden Restaurant, which they said is a major relief to cruise ship passengers who wish to check their mail.
Kathy said she worked for an airline for 30 years before she and others were laid off. She explained that the airline sold the pension to the government and she only received half of her entitlement. “It was either the half or nothing,” she said.
James’s company went bankrupt and he received no monetary benefits when he was laid off.
Both James and Kathy blame the massive downsizing in the United States to poor management as well as the September 11 terror attack. Kathy said despite the gloomy economic situation, those affected have to live with hope. She said they visited Nevis a year ago and liked the serenity of the island and its friendly people.
