Wednesday, January 15, 2014  -  Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE said he is pleased that Government is able to reduce its financial debts and will continue to move in this direction.

In his Budget Address on Monday, January 13, Premier Smith said, “Three budgets later, I am proud to say that we are turning the corner.... But most obvious is that just past our midterm, and having recently materially paid off large amounts of inherited outstanding bills, we are optimistic and are looking forward to a budget that begins to deliver that advantage for our people.”

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations today, Premier Smith said the accounts payable recorded on the JDE system and remaining unpaid as of December 31, 2013 totalled $133,142.72.

“My Government will continue to do all it can to reduce our outstanding financial debts,” he said, adding, “My responsibility is to move the ship to calmer waters.”

He further added, “My Government will continue to make decisions that would significantly improve the BVI’s economy in the medium and long term, both and now and in the future.”

In announcing a budget of $301,746,000, Premier Smith said, “Since my Government took office Madam Speaker, we have indeed been planning diligently to secure that advantage for our people. And rightly so, as in governing, diligence begins in large part with budgeting.”
