Government To Upgrade Telephone System To Provide Better Service

Wednesday, January 15, 2014Steps are being taken by the Telephone Services Management Unit (TSMU) to upgrade Government’s telephone (landline) system in an effort to provide better communications services to customers.

According to the manager of TSMU Mr. Reynell Turnbull, the old models of desk phones will be replaced with Cisco (Voice over Internet Protocol) phones, a system that offers higher level features.

“The team has been working on the upgrade and system switch-over for some time,” he said, adding that some major changes are expected.

“The prefixes ‘494’ and ‘495’ will be dissolved. Instead, all Government extensions will automatically become direct lines and start with the prefix ‘468’,” Mr. Turnbull said further adding, “It is a necessary undertaking as the growing demand for efficient communication has exceeded the capabilities of the system which has been in place for some years.”

In using an example, he explained that the extension ‘2698’ will become directly ‘468-2698’. This he said will give customers direct access to the person at that desk phone. He said that persons will still have the option of utilising the telephone services operators to connect to the extension.

He further explained that 90 percent of the leased circuits and telephone lines connecting geographically distant offices will be terminated throughout Government.

“With the removal of these lines, the monthly communication bills of respective ministries, departments and units will be reduced significantly,” Mr. Turnbull said.

The ongoing upgrade is slated to be completed by March 15, 2014.

The TSMU has scheduled an interim Government Telephone Directory at this changeover point, and a full directory will be published at a later date. The upgrade does not affect Government issued cellular phones.

The Telephone Services Management Unit aims to continuously implement, adapt to, and manage the Government’s telecommunication system in order to always have enabled cutting-edge technology that affords efficient communications.
