BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING Auckland Hector’s election as President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA), many individuals in St. Kitts and Nevis are curious to how a Kittitian holding such position could impact cricket in the Federation.
Hector, a former Leeward Islands captain, has been serving as President since December and is also expected to serve as a Director on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
Speaking with SKNVibes Sports, Hector claimed that he does not wish to single out one country but to improve the sport in the entire sub-region.
“I don't want to be selfish about it because from the outset I said it is not going to be a St. Kitts situation or an Auckland Hector situation, I am going to be looking at the overall picture of Leeward Islands Cricket.”
He is however optimistic that there are benefits available for the Federation.
“I am sure that with the Secretariat being here in St. Kitts and the leadership out of St. Kitts, the island stands to benefit from that.
“The only two international grounds in the Leeward Islands are the one here at Warner Park and the other in Antigua. So when the Leeward Islands are assigned matches they will either be played here in St. Kitts or in Antigua.”
Hector also stated that new initiatives being implemented by the Federal Government would provide an opportunity for youngsters involved in the sport.
“I am sure that every opportunity will be given to young players in St. Kitts to develop their skills, especially bearing in mind that the government is presently in the process of re-organising the Len Harris Academy which is one of the better facilities within the region. And, hopefully, once it has been redeveloped and proper programmes established, the youngsters here on St. Kitts will certainly benefit.”
“With the lights being erected at Warner Park, that will also be a plus for St. Kitts cricket because we would have an opportunity with the ground being available for us to play night matches, and that definability be a plus for St. Kitts cricket in particular...tThen eventually to the Leeward Islands.”
