CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – IN his words, he always had a passion to work for himself, so it was inevitable that Jeffrey Lewis would one day run a business of his own. That business is JSL Services which, according to Lewis, “can take on any job”.
Lewis qualifies this statement by saying JSL provides services in air-conditioning, refrigeration, painting, tiling, plumbing and even carpentry. He also said that if there is a service that he or any of his three employees could not provide, he would outsource it.
“I have people who do work for me. They have their own work, but if I want them I can always call on them.”
JSL also handled landscaping during its early days but, according to Lewis, that aspect of the business has not developed.
Lewis, who returned to Nevis in 2004 after living for years in St. Thomas, USVI, and in Miami, first ventured into business as a bar owner. However, differences with his family led to him leaving the operation which is now run by family members.
Lewis also worked with Finished Touch but left after the relationship with management soured. According to Lewis: “I said to myself, if I could use my hands for someone else I could also use them for myself, and since I didn’t plan on working for someone for the rest of my life I decided to start my own business.”
The young man established JSL Services in 2007 and has steadily been building a clientele which include Hamoron Services and SKNVibes. His staff includes wife Sheryl who is the company’s secretary, but Lewis has plans for additional employees as his business develops.
Lewis told SKNVibes that, like in any other business, there are ups and downs – some of which include collecting payments from clients.
He also wished he had started his business earlier but said, “Some things you cannot start until you are ready.”
