ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Jan 24, 2014 – LIAT – The Caribbean Airline continues to render assistance to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia, the two countries most affected by devastating floods last month.
LIAT Cargo recently teamed up with the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association as well as the Bryson’s Shipping organisation to deliver more than 15,000 pounds of relief supplies to both countries.
General Manager of Bryson’s Shipping Mr. Nathan Dundas expressed his “profound gratitude” to LIAT for agreeing to facilitate the shipments free of cost.
“LIAT, and specifically LIAT Cargo, was one of the first responders after the deadly floods which also affected Dominica,” he said.
“It is indeed a privilege and a real pleasure for us to be part of this initiative of assisting and highlighting the needs of the people of St. Vincent and St. Lucia following the unfortunate situation that took place there over the Christmas period with the flooding in those areas.”
Mr. Dundas explained that the shipment consisted of water “which remains an essential need” and other critical items such as blankets and sheets which were acquired from many donors and sponsors in Antigua and Barbuda.
Executive Manager of LIAT Cargo and Quikpak Mr. Wilbur Edwards said LIAT is honored to be a part of the initiative.
He explained that the company used its dedicated freighter aircraft to make two trips to St. Vincent, delivering 8,815 pounds of relief supplies; and one trip to St. Lucia, delivering 6,855 pounds.
In addition to the dedicated freighter aircraft, LIAT Cargo continues to move relief supplies on scheduled passenger flights and via LIAT Quikpak.
