What Kittitians say about food prices

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOOD is considered as any substance consumed by humans to provide nutritional support for the body. But we at SKNVibes Health wanted to know what people thought about food prices in the supermarkets of St. Kitts.

We interviewed six persons who declined to mention their names but agreed to be identified by their occupations.

    Their responses were as follow.

Question: As a parent or just an independent person, what are your thoughts about the various food prices in the supermarkets and what you think can be done to ease high prices, if any?

Nurse: “Food prices are not that high to me. To me you can still have three meals a day, but there are some foods in the supermarkets that are costly. But we can’t blame them for that…they have to run their business.”

Labourer: “The prices of food high because the government put it that way. How can we live when food is very expensive? You pay like over $800 a month in food. That is not right! The only way we could solve this is a change of power.”

Security Guard: “I have a problem with the high food prices. What we use to pay under the previous ruling party is a lot more with this one. They mean to kill us out! Most of the money I make go to food…I don’t understand that.”

Engineer: “I don’t think the prices of foods are high, I believe it is the way we spend and what we buy is an issue. A person would go in the supermarket and prefer to buy a packet of rice rather than a bag which can last them for a month.

“Secondly, most of us go into the fast food restaurants almost every day and spend as much as $30 for a meal, but we are annoyed to pay $15 for a bag of uncut chicken. We have to examine ourselves before we point fingers.”

Student: “We as consumers have to shop smartly. We go to one supermarket and cry that the prices are high and we can’t afford it when we are too lazy to go looking to see which producer has it cheaper.

“I have been to other countries and have see supermarkets drop their prices ridiculously low just to draw customers. The supermarkets here will continue to be that way here because we give them the privilege to.”

Housewife: “I think food prices are high on some commodities but not all. Sometimes I shop in the supermarkets and wonder why we can’t produce these same things right in our Federation. Maybe they can be cheaper.”

If you agree or disagree with the above views, leave a comment below and tell us at SKNVibes Health what are your thoughts on the food prices in the Federation.
