Footballer to be tried for sexual offence

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A national footballer is expected to stand trial at the Basseterre High Court this week having been charged with sexual offences.

     

    The young man is charged with rape and unlawful carnal knowledge. The trial is expected to begin today (Feb. 4) and would be presided over by His Lordship Justice Darshan Ramdhani.

     

    The alleged incidents were said to have been committed in June and October of 2011 and the accused was arrested on November 6, 2011 and later charged on two counts of rape and two counts of unlawful carnal knowledge.

     

    Leading the prosecution team is Counsel Greatess Gordon who would be assisted by Director of Public Prosecutions Travers Sinanan, while the accused is represented by Dr. Henry Brown QC, Hesketh Benjamin and Marissa Hobson.

     

    Ten witnesses are scheduled to give evidence on behalf of the prosecution after which, the accused  would have the opportunity to give evidence or have people testify on his behalf.

     

    If convicted, the accused faces the possibility of life in prison.
